I originally made this page on April 1st, 2024 as a joke for my fellow Illinoisians. Now, I’m recycling it for another laugh.
While it would be great if selling cannabis products were as easy as a click of a button, unfortunately, reality isn’t that high…unless you have a hemp license. Then it really is that easy (for now, at least).
There’s nothing more socially equitable than an even playing field: one where everybody can participate and not just a select few.
Let’s take a leaf out of the Illinois Cannabis Regulation and Tax Act(CRTA), which begins with, “In the interest of allowing law enforcement to focus on violent and property crimes...the General Assembly finds and declares that the use of cannabis should be legal for persons 21 years of age or older".
Considering that the Cannabis Regulation and Tax Act (CRTA) is now the law of the land in Illinois, maybe it’s high time we allowed law enforcement to concentrate on more pressing matters. Removing barriers to entry, eliminating license caps (while retaining and strengthening ownership limits), and ending the continued criminalization of cannabis would allow law enforcement to focus on violent and property crime.
Remember: prohibition has been proven to be a failed policy. You’d be a fool to try and bring it back.
Happy April Fools’ Day!
