In this episode, I have a conversation with Emma Savage about her journey in the sex industry. Emma recounts her progression from starting as a young stripper to becoming a licensed legal prostitute in Nevada, and eventually transitioning to independent work. Throughout our discussion, Emma candidly shares both the highs and lows of her experience in sex work, including her reasons for leaving Nevada’s legal sex industry.

good doing good uh you want to go ahead and introduce yourself to my audience hi
I’m Emma y my first interview so first interview cool well we’ll make this
comfortable for you um where do you come from Emma like what color Colorado hell
yeah Rocky Mountain High hell yeah I love col raised born and raised I was
just about to ask that well cool so Emma you are a licensed sex worker did I get
that right no I was a license sex worker okay cool I worked at the chicken ranch
for about a year and a half and then I went independent around last year in
2023 in like March that’s awesome I have so much respect for the independent
workers so I’m really excited to speak with you uh about that
um before we get into sex work um I just wanted to ask you tell me tell me your
backstory how did you find yourself where you are today oh I have a long
backstory um a lot of it I keep private as of now um for safety of my family um
so really um yeah I I kind of came about this industry for the reason of
supporting and taking care of family is kind of how I came about this gotcha
gotcha so it was just uh an option uh that you were able to get some money
coming in right yeah exactly um I started when I was 18 so gotcha gotcha
now did you start with like traditional sex work that most people think of which
actually involves sex or did you start stripping how did you start no
um how I started is very interesting actually um so when I was 18 I started I
was working in elderly care and doing caregiving and all of those kinds of things making about $111 an hour doing
caregiving and I had a friend of mine that was talking about working in the strip clubs and I’m like well why am I
going to wipe butt for $111 an hour when I could be doing this instead
and so I was terrified to um get up on a stage at 18 it was super scary for me so
I ended up in these like private lap dance places um that ended up being um
what’s the word happy ending places so I got thrown into the mix very
quickly I went from not having any experience I up very conservative
Christian I never knew what the inside of a strip club even looked like and
then I was you know watching some guy jack off in front of me how did you get comfortable with that
given your background I mean was it just that you needed the money or um I think
there it it came as to um is is that um what the money the
money is really great and so I I’m willing to do certain things like for me
a man jacking off um isn’t you know as bad as me having to clean ass for a
living nurses deserve so much more so much more support than they are
given you know um and so and I’m also really good at what I do so it I I found
like a talent in it right I’m like oh this light switch went off that I’m like this is what I should be doing this is
what I’m good at got so it was a kind of mixture of both the money and that I’m
good at it and that I also don’t mind doing the profession
itself right whereas though I grew up very conservative me myself was
not gotcha keep inside gotcha it sounds like yeah when you when it came came down to it you had
a work option that was often very disgusting and you had another option
that pres and I was talking about wiping butts um and then you get presented with another option that sure it’s not like
it’s not you know without some thoughts but you basically were like this isn’t
as bad as wiping butts yeah or at least you know at least
if I’m getting paid for something I want to get paid my worth and I felt like you know getting paid higher rates for doing
similar actions of Intimacy in some lines of ways yeah so I’m curious was worth it uh
yeah it it became first it was the money and then it became oh I’m good at these things it’s not just the money that’s
great yeah I started in those those places uh
those places were very interesting by far yeah so I’m curious when you started
at those places you said you thought you were just dancing and then it turns out like there was an expectation of a happy
ending like how did that first happen if um so when I first called up these these
strip clubs I’m like hey you guys only do private dances you don’t do stages
and they’re like yeah I’m like awesome great that’s what I want because I was more comfortable doing the one-on ones
at first than being upstage in front of everybody and getting naked and going
you know um and so so when I get into those places
and I walked in and the first the first time it was this little old Asian man and he basically gave me the rundown of
everything told me that what they were doing what everything’s going on inside of the place um and I was just so like
okay I’m just gonna give this a shot and try it that I wasn’t like I don’t I
don’t know how to put it I was scared but I’m like I’m going to try this because I see all these other girls
happy I see all these other girls making money so I’m going to give this this an opportunity for
myself um it was scary some of the situations were scary uh the place did
not have um proper security within it um so we were kind of left to our own
devices in terms of um if something did happen um so that’s something that uh I
don’t think a lot of people realize a lot of women don’t talk
about so one of one of my first clients in my first week um he came in and he
told me that he was watching my car he was he saw my car he would s see me coming in and out of the out of the
place and he told me that I was going to come work with him and stay with him for for the rest of my life and so it’s not
uh uh you know the money is great right but there’s it’s also hard work it’s not
something that is like Oh yay we have stacks of cash now and it’s there’s it’s not for nothing it’s definitely a
dangerous um industry If You’re Not Safe and Smart
yeah and you were only 18 at the time how old are you now I am 27 hey me too
um cool well uh what what I’m just curious how did that conversation go
with the the business owner like look yep I told you we’re doing private dances but also like at the end you need
to get them off too that’s kind of an expectation or how did that conversation go so with I’ve worked in a variety of
different places and this my first place that I’m talking about they did um so we
didn’t exactly Jack them off ourselves what we would do is we would do private dances and then they’re allowed to jack
off during the show first is a lot of a lot of uh strip clubs like normal
everyday strip clubs that aren’t those really small run run down that I ended up at
because I had no idea what I was doing yeah they don’t allow guys to just
jack off you know and so it was it was made very clear to me uh I I went in
there and he gave me the lowdown he’s like this is where you sleep this is where you stay this is how it works he’s
like men like to be beat black and blue and you’ll get paid for it and he showed me this wall of like
BDSM stuff I was so um in shock and over
like uh because I was a good Christian girl right so so I was so like like wow
this whole new world for myself I wasn’t exactly you know scared of the situation
I was excited for the opportunities and that those things did exist in the
World gotcha and so at some of the clubs you worked at you would stay there you’d
like sleep there yeah wow yeah there’s a few of
them um uh it’s it’s those um when I first started out so it was very ghetto
places and they would have uh they have like beds or couches and they they make
girls do shifts like like in a brothel um those those places definitely
set me up for when I did go to the chicken ranch I kind of understood a
little bit more than somebody that was brand new to the brool because they did lineups in those places too so because
it was only like private dances we would have all of the girls line up for them
for whoever showed up that night so it was very it was very like
um like a mixer between a brothel and a strip club if that makes sense yeah you
know in some of my research and talking to some sex workers and uh strippers it
seems like yeah there are so many similarities between strip clubs that at this point I’ve basically become
convinced that strip clubs all across the nation are just kind of don’t ask don’t tell
brothels right depends totally depends sure 100% depends
um I think all of the big problems that I have with strip clubs and the problems that I have with
brothel it both umbrellas under each other um so I do agree with that that I
feel like all of the problems that I see with a brothel I see with the strip clubs too um it’s just kind of how how
deep they are in those problems yeah and I want to and I want to get to that but
uh one question that I’m just curious I’m trying to keep this in like a linear story so like as you start to advance
through sex work via strip club and and ultimately move through the chicken ranch before we get to that I just
wanted to ask like as you were going through that as you were getting more accustomed you’ve mentioned a few times
you were a good Christian girl I was raised as a good Christian boy and uh
yeah sometimes the things that I did throughout High School whether it be this or sexual sexually related like I I
would feel repressed I’d feel guilty I’d feel shame you know God was going to
punish me those are the thoughts that would come up did you have any of those internal struggles or or and I guess I
should ask also are you still religious um so we I I had those
religious internal struggles way before I even hit sex work um because I’m
bisexual um so and I grew up very religious um in the terms of where
Christianity like homosexuality is very very sinful you know um so I struggled
with a lot of that shame and process through that um way before I entered the
strip club I still feel like some of it it’s not internalized but I do see other
people behave and react to my profession with those stereotypes and that shaming
and all of those things that you were expressing about it because of the those internalized things in their heads um
I’ve processed and grown a lot for myself um I’m not religious I’m I’m
spiritual 100% yeah my spirituality is super funky
that that would be a whole another hour something plus conversation but I’m very uh spiritual um I believe you know
everybody should believe whatever they want as long as it’s not hurting anybody else you know to each their own yeah so
um totally makes sense and yeah I don’t know that I’m like I say we could spend
an hour on this but I’ll just quickly say I don’t know that I’m atheist but I I definitely feel like maybe I’m
agnostic leaning atheist where it’s like I don’t know what it is but I think
there’s something but I would never anyways though that’s a whole other uh conversation um I’m curious what what
was it like what have we not touched on with regard to working in a strip club and how did you ultimately get to the
chicken ranch um I got to the chicken ranch
because of um the pandemic that the was it that the strip
clubs were like shut down and stuff and you’re like [ _ ] I gotta get somewhere and that’s how you got to the chicken ranch or no the the strip club shut down and so um because the strip club shut down and then they reopened the strip clubs the money from my opinion was never the same and I started working in a um strip club out in Arizona I moved out to Arizona for a little while in the strip club out there um their their dances they were we were making $20 per dance versus I was used to $40 a lap dance um so that was half of my pay it was a half a pay cut um people were not spending it was a small town so the the things that they thought was a lot of money was not comparatively to what I was making in Denver so I got very frustrated working in a club like that so I’m like I need other options and a lot of girls were doing things you know um extras and stuff like that and I’m like hey I can do that but I need some more money and that’s kind of how I ended up at at the chicken ranch was I’m like hey I I saw a documentary a long time ago go and it piqu my interest and it’s always been something I wanted to do in my life but I was never ballsy enough to apply which documentary did you see huh which documentary did you see um nobody’s seen it um it was this Vice documentary like I don’t know where it went I can never find it but I watched I watched the whole I watched the whole chicken ranch and I was like I want to work there yeah nice that’s cool it was super super great it was a great opportunity so what was it like to apply and uh arrive at the chicken ranch sparking up for this I’m a weed smoker too I I was gonna say Emma I just learned something else about you yeah I’m a big po um so I got on their website and I filled out like their little application thing um yeah I I was just very like sexual about it I it’s really funny I’m like this and probably pique their interest um and then after I had the the how old were you at the time um 25 25 okay 25 um 24 I’m really bad with I’m really bad with numbers 24 25 um and so we had a we had a video call for like an interview sort of kind of like this in a way you know a zoom meeting and I met with the the Bro the um not the brothel owner but the Madam and then her her management underneath it and we talked for a little bit and they’re like yeah we would love for you to work with us and then they gave me all of the information on how to like do my licensing and get my Sheriff’s card and all of the like administrative [ _ ] and then I booked in the tour
um and I flew out there and when I got there it was very late at night so it
was very like here’s all these rules and then you know I woke up the next morning doing and got my STD check
so kind of the First first day kind of went were you
excited yeah um the money the money there um the rates for working there are
far more than most places that I’ve worked by far yeah sure so I was very
excited uh to go work out there yeah like I said it was it was a dream of
mine that I was never able to to do but I
did so what was it like um what was it like um I feel like I cut
you off you were about to say something else you said and then when I totally forgot um lot lots of pro lots of Pros
lots of cons um it’s kind of hard to that’s a very very general question
um yeah no for sure I’m in it that way go through it what are what are some of the pros and some of the
cons um some of the pros uh um I really like the women that I worked with I
think they’re very inspirational I think they’re wonderful human beings um even the women that didn’t like me so much I
still learned a lot from them um it really like the women that worked at the
chicken ranch really gave me a different perspective about my career path and
where I was headed because working at the strip club a lot of a lot of us would just you know get dressed look
pretty go in make money and go home there wasn’t there’s not much afterthought to it if that makes sense
um it was just we go get cash go home and do it all over again versus the girls at the chicken ranch they’re
talking about advertising business plans marketing strategies like so many
different variety of things and really treating it like a business that uh I I learned a lot the networking um is
awesome um I highly Rec like I I think it’s a good idea for people who haven’t been in the
industry to go to a place like that before they do something
independent um because if you you you got to have that experience and that knowledge and all of those things and
those women definitely um taught me so much and um helped me be the woman that
I am today so that’s one of the great like my my biggest positive out of all
of it was the people that I worked with I don’t even you know some people have
said what you just said but I’ve never heard it heard it put that way and that’s very interesting like you almost
said you viewed the chicken ranch as almost like foundational to you becoming independent which I thought was really
cool to hear yeah I don’t um think that I would uh advi like they they taught me a lot
in terms of safety um my health um how to make money how to do all all of that
before I went independent um I feel like I would not know what I was doing at all if I
didn’t and I didn’t have that kind of guidance um and I would not be safe and
I would not be you know those those women you know they taught me a lot so I’m very thankful for those things yeah
there’s probably a lot of like different screening things you have to do in order to feel comfortable and I I only bring
that up because I like literally one of the workers I interviewed was from a hotel room and that’s what she explained
was that she still had to vet her clients you know just like she did at the brothel but that was something she
learned at the brothel which is what you just said I thought that was interesting yeah I didn’t learn screening at the
brothel um I learned how to one of the biggest things I learned how to do is to
check for for STDs and things of that nature um to make sure that I’m safe and
the people that I’m serving are safe safe yes um and without you know there’s
a lot of um knowledge that people are unaware about in terms of sexual health
and keeping healthy in a you know in s safe sex um for example like dental dams
most people have no idea what a dental dam is but it’s a way to protect yourself from oral when you have oral
sex and you’re giving a woman oral sex you know so I learned a lot of ways to
have have be healthy safe sex yeah um screening screening I
learned from girls um from from there but not directly from the
brothel um that’s one thing that like is a problem that I see with a lot of
places is that they don’t really they they have ID but they don’t do screening
necessarily on on these men um I know when I’ve had conversations with some
brothel other brothel I don’t like to put names or places on things just trying to keep it generalized not some
places um like have have photos of men that they don’t like and that they’re
like this is a bad guy keep this man away or X Y and Z or when they P pull up their ID they they get flagged for being
a bad human like there there was not he did stupid things he’s not allowed back in here but in other places those kinds
of safety measures are not being taken place um and I take those safety
measures at all times um so I feel more safe trusting myself a lot of the time
than these these managers that don’t seem to to care so
much and I’m not saying every manager there but there’s certain there’s certain places that don’t care and there
are certain places that do sure makes sense and the caring definitely varies
I’m sure yeah I’m sure and it varies whether you’re you’re a favorite not a favorite you
know yeah any other like pros things that you really enjoyed about working in
the brothel and did you work at more places than the chicken ranch no the chicken ranch is the one brothel that
I’ve worked at um I don’t see myself going back to working at the brothel
anytime soon yeah I see it in a long-term stance possibly
but um short term I don’t see the the need or the desire to go back um some of
the positives um more of the positives um Administration they take care of a
lot of those things um that as working independent um I have to take care of
now um versus you know if I go work in a strip club they’re doing all of the advertising and the marketing and they
have the business license they have all of those things they’re handling all of that administrative piece for me so all
I got to do is show up and make the money essentially you know which I still
advertise for myself nonetheless but sure they’re still doing a big portion
of that like when I had myself on the chicken ranch website my My Views were
were very high if that makes sense so there’s there’s benefits to having
somebody handle all of that admin labor for me because that takes up such a big
chunk of my time yeah and I’ve even seen some brothel like they hire photographers for
the women like things like that can be really helpful right you know because it’s not that you can’t take pictures yourself but to have some professional
come in and you don’t have to pay for it like that’s yeah they took pictures of
Me for free so yeah so things like that I felt added to your case of probably
why you may have liked working there you know yeah there’s there’s pros um I
really enjoyed like the the place that they had us staying at the chicken ranch
was nice um like I didn’t feel like it was gross or disgusting like the
previous places that I was talking about that I first started working at you know it was very clean we had a hot tub and
we had a spa and we have all of this nice fancy amenities um we have a
private Chef right so we we definitely were treated
um from my opinion working at the chicken ranch I was treated with far
more respect in general as a human being than working in the majority of strip
clubs that I’ve worked at because they kind of see me more as
like when when I’m doing good and I’m working there that shows that they’re
doing good and that I’m that it’s it’s beneficial for both me and the chicken ranch versus working at a strict Club if
they you know they’re they’re not interested in promoting a singular girl or her career they don’t like that it’s
come to the strip club they don’t want you promoting yourself at the strip club
and that’s one thing that I see brothels do right that like an advancement that that I don’t see the strip clubs
progressing in and I’m curious do you I mean I can think of many different
reasons why they would do that no I mean people are people they’re all unique right so that’s number one and I think
you say hey we’ve got Emma Savage here it’s like well there’s only one Emma Savage right so it’s I think that’s an
interesting thing that I didn’t even think about but I’m curious do you think that the brothel lean in to that
more because they get half of your earnings or is that also true of the
strip club because I don’t know is that also true of the strip club it depends on which strip club that you’re talking
about sure um so the strip club I’ve worked at one strip club which I’m not
giving the location of but I worked at one one club for of almost eight years
on and off it’s the one that I’ve stayed at the most um long term um they just
have a house fee and then you tip what you can um versus let’s say when I was
working out in Arizona and I was working in that strip club they were taking a percentage of my cut every single day
and then I got a tip everybody out on top of that and pay house fees and all this extra stuff so it really depends on
which location you’re talking about but I think that’s a problem with every
single like the brothel and the strip clubs is that they’re really focusing on
their external customer and not their internal customer and they’ve been screwing us over so much that they’re
ruining their own businesses I think that’s the perfect segue to talk about maybe some of the
the cons of working in the legal sex industry what do you
have um it’s it’s a it’s a I have a
very nuanced opinion about this um so I think talking about decriminalization
first because I think decriminalization is more important than
legalization and without because we currently have legalization in Nevada but nowhere else um so it’s kind of like
cannabis um in those terms you know it’s very much like that
um so where people can still be arrested for it this and that our first the first thing that everybody needs to focus on
is decrim ization and then we can move forward with legalization um and I think that’s the
most important thing and I just wanted to add to your point
briefly uh Las Vegas I believe has the most arrests for prostitution in the
United States meanwhile Las Vegas is in the only state with legal prostitution I
think that’s interesting it’s legal in the state
but normally I like to fact check my St my stats but I 100% trust you because
most people assume when I’ve discussed about working there they think that that it’s legal in Las Vegas most people do
not understand that it’s not legal in Las Vegas um so a lot of people assume
when they’re going to Las Vegas that they could go get services not realizing that those services are illegal and
then you know becoming getting arrested and decrim ization is the most will help
the most vulnerable of the population of of sex workers entirely and I think it’s
really important to discuss it in terms of you know safety and stuff like that and the the people who are very anti-sex
work that are like oh but but you know pimps and human trafficking and this and that well under the current laws of
legality these women that are being trafficked that are being pimped out that are facing these kinds of
situations they cannot go get help because it’s illegal for them to go get help they will get charged with a crime
just like the those people will so they’re not able to go seek the the
supports and get Justice for the things that they’re going through um and I
think that’s very important gotcha and I did a quick Google thank you for you know it’s
always good to check the facts and it sounds like cities like New York Chicago and Los Angeles also report High arrests
Las Vegas definitely has seen a high number um but it does not necessarily
have the most arrests overall um it’s it does say in 2023 Nevada had the highest
rate of prostitution arrests per capita driven largely by Las Vegas I think that’s what I was thinking of but it’s a
little bit of a different stat so yeah even women too so it’s not just clients
even women assume that it’s it’s legal in in in Las Vegas yeah I mean I’ve seen
pictures where there’s like trucks driving around that say like women women women you know and like women will just
approach you and they say it’s legal Google it and if you Google it
it’ll you might be misled because it’ll say yes it’s legal in Nevada but not in
what is it NY County and some other
County oh did I lose you
so I’m guessing that your phone died or something like that
overheated fun well if we need to if if that happens again we need to pick up
later we totally can but anyways we were talking about the the sort of the negatives of working in the sex industry
of which you said you had a pretty nuanced view um you want to pick up where we left
off yeah um I agree with uh legalization but I think that there needs to be a
huge emphasis on um putting women like me in the Forefront and having you know
like small business loans um grants those kinds of things for somebody like
me or the other women that you have spoke with um to have our own venues
instead of like with the brothel in Nevada where the licensing is you know
only with that one person and when they die that’s the end of it you know um we
we deserve a chance as well and um all of those licensing and those barriers
create that um Power Dynamic um that’s not that’s not should
not exist um I don’t I don’t like when people take half of my
money I don’t like that um and in some places uh it’s even
more than half of your money um which they’re not going to like that I say that but it’s
true um so yeah when you with the with the chicken ranch when somebody has a
limo and they they take you know the limo service to the chicken ranch um to
put it to put it in um the easiest words I could explain it if a man gives me
$1,500 I’m only going to get $500 back from that ,500 just because he took the limo
service if he an Uber a lift even though they don’t work with us they’re still
taking that, out of that 1,500 so you know for somebody just
starting out I think it’s a great place to begin um but I think those those power
dynamics um they’re not they’re not getting with the times anymore they’re still living back in the 1980s
1990s when women could have afford to get 50% of that cut taken out but it’s
not like that anymore where us women can now be independent without the need to
have those places which a lot of women have so if these these businesses do want to stay in in business and keep
making money they need to really focus on their internal customers rather than their exter
external yeah because they’re really making the most money of us so they should really be focusing on how best to
make us happy right well like you say it’s this combination of Licensing plus the
business model which gives this power differential where the operator is up
here and you the sex worker the person that’s that’s running the show really does you just don’t really have that
much say and you like so it like you say I I’m not trying I’m trying to add to
your point that it’s uh and I know you mentioned licensing at the beginning but
just in case people didn’t understand it it is the mixture of those two things the culture plus like the regulatory
environment that emboldens them to to not give you more favorable working
conditions in my opinion the power the power that they have yeah yeah and it’s like the only
way you can take it that power away like you started this off with with is to
instead decriminalize because re that’s part of the power that they have is that the
only place you can legally do this is there right so it’s like there’s more
power you know so if if just decriminalizing in and of itself would almost level the playing field of course
there still needs to be as you said uh the ability to open a business that’s one of the things all of the sex workers
I spoke to said is that I wish I could run my own place I’m tired of getting I’m the sex worker like I know what sex
workers want you know so yeah I think I think we’re
starting to kind of collectively have that mindset which I’m thankful
for because it was not that way when I first started working it was very much
you know keep your head down behave versus now a lot more women are
speaking up about things um which I’m thankful for you know uh
like some of the power dynamics when I worked at the chicken ranch um when I did tours it’s 247 tours it’s 247 on
call so I would be working on call for 247 nonstop doing did you sleep lineups
huh did you sleep pretty I did yeah can you explain what
that is for people oh me means you keep you keep
whole face of makeup on and you get you’re all um I did for so long that I ended up
getting chemical burds on my face from having makeup on for so long um so I
stopped doing I stopped doing that um after that and stopped not I didn’t care
as much I just show up with no no makeup on because I wasn’t going to hurt myself
yeah and to put a finer point on it it’s the idea that you know the the doorbell could
ring at 3:23 in the morning and you want to get out there to the lineup and be
among the first you know in lineup because if you’re if you’re not there in
time then you’re not in lineup so you want to get chosen right well if you’re if you’re not in lineup um at least the
place that I worked at if you’re not in lineup they do charge you for not being in lineups they charge $100 in like a
$100 and you know $100 isn’t that much comparatively to the the rates you’re
making there but the $100 upon $100 and this $100 and that it all Stacks up
right to where it is something that is you know um because I think you know a lot of people see the
the big famous people that that go in there and make lots of money and they’re like oh yeah that’s great I’m going to
make lots of money like her you know and they just think it’s very easy and it’s it’s not
those girls who make a lot of money they’re working a lot I’ve never seen
girls work so hard in my freaking life right like so it’s that like and you can
also go broke in those places too right it’s not this quick like rich quick
scheme and those girls that make lots of money I’ve seen them not make money at all for for for a week and go under that
week too right so whether you’re the best of the best or the lowest low as the lowest it doesn’t
matter wow you know the the money you you never know when the money is going to come when it’s going to not come you
know um so you you can go broke in a place like that because you you get you
have to pay for hous like the housing the room room board you have to pay for all those little fines that Stack Up X Y
and Z the the licensing blah blah blah so you know that place is about an hour
away from Las Vegas if the closed because that happened a lot with flooding out
there and it’s the week and you got flooded out then you just paid for licensing your STD testing all of these
things and made nothing so damn it it happens to people it’s
happened to me and other people as well I made lots of money I’ve made jackpot money right but I’ve also I’ve also gone
broke there too I’ve also made my money back essentially yeah it sounds almost like a
like literally like gambling or being in the stock market like you have some down days and boy do you have some up
days you know that’s what I say working in Vegas is like you either hit the
jackpot or you come out broke it’s it’s one or the other you don’t that’s working in Vegas for
me that’s funny so how did any other any other negatives to like the legal sex
industry that you can think of that we haven’t touched on I thought one thing that we kind of breezed over by the way
as you said most places take half some take more some actually have feel like
most that I’ve heard of nickel and daimu with these different finds
um so that’s another thing that I don’t think people are you know aware
of yeah I think that’s a big one uh there was for example there was one
strip club that I worked at um last time I ever worked in that strip club um um I
went in I did my shift and I made made my money and I was the only girl at the
end of the night and I come out of the locker room and I see at least five six
dudes sitting outside of the locker room like in in there all and I’m all by myself and they’re all we we need you to
have like pay us up and I’m like what do you mean pay you up they’re like pay us you need to give each one of us 10% of
your earnings and I remember there was at least five of of those five of those men and they were very aggressive in in
their stance they weren’t nice to me about it they were very like or else
like give us our money or else and I ran out the club so fast and never never came back
um there are places like that um that are very very like they will take every
single dollar that you’re trying to make there a lot of a lot of management and not all management right I love some of
the managers that I’ve worked for but a lot of them are definitely um want to be
pimps or pimps like they they act like and that’s just what it is and you
definitely it it takes it takes a certain kind of person to be able to handle those kinds of things you know
right it it just does um and I think a lot of women don’t talk about those
things cuz uh it’s it’s definitely difficult to like talk about and really
process and understand like oh I’m I’m not nobody’s forcing me to do any of
this I’m choosing to do all of this but nonetheless like I I would still choose
working in a brothel or a strip club or any of that over taking you know a $10
an hour job or a $20 an hour job or even a 3040 $50 an hour job a $100 an hour
job I was would still choose this and what I do now you know because I like
what I do I love what I do so when I when I talk about the negative things about it it’s not because I’m like oh
yeah [ _ ] the industry you know I’m like I want to save you I want to like here’s the things that I see wrong that I think you need to address because you know if I was being a hater honestly I wouldn’t be giving all of this advice and recommendations I would keep it to myself yeah and take all those strategies for myself and go do it by myself but I don’t want that I want us all to survive in the make money you know so so commenting on how you know like like why is a woman going to choose to that that knows what she’s doing that is that very well knows how they’re doing it etc etc why is she going to choose working in a brothel when they’re going to take half of her money instead of her just making all of money herself um I think one of the biggest reasons why women stay in the brothel is because or at least the one that I stayed at is because they really emphasize like safety you know like we’re going to make sure you’re safe and this and that and they I I don’t feel any Le I actually feel more safe by myself than working in a place like that yeah that’s something that I heard from from a few different sex workers what do can I what do you mean by that though like I know that’s a really vague question again but I like how you take hits before I ask some of those questions like here we go thank you just trying to be myself um so it it is a loaded question so let’s take it with with the other girls right um some some women and I’m not talking about all women um they they have drug problems or alcohol problems and so when you’re being put in places with people who are drinking and doing drugs their choices are not going to be as smart as when they’re sober right so there’s that that part there there’s also the the competition where where man management likes to make Jabs at each one of us and kind of make us try to compete against each other or build favorites so there’s also that power Dynamic going um in terms of the The Other Women there’s there’s lots of like like pimps like those those things do exist pimps and all those things really exist and sometimes it’s not it’s not the people you you would expect it’s the home girl that wants to you know hang out with you after work that’s trying to set you up unfortunately um so you got to be careful of who you make friends with because not everybody has the the best intentions for you or for other people um and then the man like in terms of like management um they don’t really stop those things in a lot of cases and or take um safety as seriously as we do like um it there’s just a lot more conflict that comes from it versus when I am just myself and I am meeting with one extra person there’s so much less of um a chance of violence and or problems than when I go work in a strip club that everybody’s showing up to which I can’t control as much of the situation am I making sense yeah yeah exactly I mean that’s that’s one of the main things that I heard from the woman that I met at the hotel is that you know I get to choose if they even show up you know like Cole the only reason you’re here is because I let you come here I let you know where I’m at you know and I was like that’s an interesting point yeah that’s one big thing is I get a choose versus like when I go like I would not meet the men that I see in the strip clubs outside of the strip clubs um I meet them inside of the strip clubs um but like a lot of those men like I would not choose them as client I would not put them in a in a room a hotel room alone with me alone right and so and and I can I can identify that risk but the strip club still lets the guy come in wasted shitfaced um can’t you know very disrespectful to the women blah blah blah but as long as he’s spending money they don’t they they put a blind eye to it or you know well one is uh there was one time I was doing a lab dance and this man one of the only times I’ve ever had a situation like this right thankfully I was doing a lab dance I give clean I give clean lap dances um he was trying to he I I felt some like cold and wet on my butt and I’m like oh no that’s a [ _ ] and I get up and I freak out and I’m like I’m like oh no like he has his
dick out and the the security guards didn’t believe me and we’re trying to like we’re we’re taking his side saying
that I was trying to have sex with him blah blah blah and I’m like no no no that’s not what I was trying to do they
were taking his side and I look down and he has his pants still down like behind
up below his waist and and he has a condom on his dick and he’s talking about his kids and I’m like see look he
was look what he was trying to do like he doesn’t even have his pants up and they’re like okay now get out right but
it took it took them seeing him with his pants down in the condom for them
to do something about it which was not okay right and there’s
a lot of those kinds of circumstances that like when I’m the one in control that none of those things would be going
down right versus in a strip club I have to deal with things that I necessarily
wouldn’t because I’m working for them not working for myself
right that’s crazy I didn’t I never really thought about that that’s a huge
difference between both of those Industries and working independent yeah I don’t I don’t
recommend anybody who hasn’t been in the industry for at least five years to be
independent got in my opinion um just because I feel like I can handle like I
I my experience has given me the capability of doing so I would not
advise anybody just starting out brand new like they need they need to go through the strip clubs or the brothel
or something of that measure um unfort like it it teaches you those girls the
the the networking and the things you learn from the other women is very
important you don’t want to be put in a a hotel room alone with another man and
you’ve never done any of these things before you you are going to you are not going to be in control in that situation
there right yeah what I’ve liked about doing this series is that you know people like you share extremely helpful
advice for anybody that might be considering getting into the industry and then also the other part of this
this entire like the reason I was inspired to talk to so many sex workers and travel all the way to Nevada is
because it’s like it’s this idea that yes it’s only legal in Nevada but what what would we change what would we do
differently if we were going to copy and paste Nevada into Illinois where I live
or New York which just decriminalized sex work and so that that kind of inspired this entire series because I
noticed the regulatory framework and how few brothel there were and how they were
all in remote areas and and that there was a power differential or the possibility of one and I began to wonder
this this seems ripe for abuse you know and maybe smart women like yourself can navigate it but um a lot of people I
think including myself when I first started researching this were under the impression that this was like I don’t
know how to like put I haven’t been able to tell every anybody this in a way that I felt is understandable but I’ll try
the first time I went went to Colorado and went to a dispensary I had this like magical feeling like even when I when I
crossed the state line I was like oh I’m in a legal State and I like I had this like warm feeling in my heart that like
while in every other state including my home state at the time what I was doing would have been illegal but hey I’m in
Colorado right now and it’s legal and I don’t I don’t know why but I always thought that people that go to brothel
or people that work in brothel must have that same sort of feeling Al be it in a different way and I quickly learned that
that doesn’t seem to be the case for most people um but yeah I also just
learned that there are so many similarities between the regulatory Frameworks which put the business owner
in such a high high power uh position versus the
workers which have to basically just respond to the whims
so yeah I think that could be said about most job Industries true very true I
just think that that women in us have have a certain capability and power and
grit and stamina with us that we do have the full capability and capacity to
change things the way that we desire if we just give that give ourselves a
little faith that um because we’re very talented business
women right so yeah and I think you know when I’ve T when I’ve discussed it with other sex
workers one of the biggest um things that they’re nervous about is that it’s very hard to trust
the other women in the industry which rightfully so um but we all want to get
a back I know that I trust that I trust that we all want to get a back and making sure that we have our
rights and and our our protections and you know put making sure that we you
know could possibly get loans in the future at one point to be able to start our own business or grants like let’s
let’s really like put our first our best foot forward in this you know
um why why do why do they have to die with that man you know we we are smart
we are capable we’re the ones making the
money yeah it’s uh it’s really crazy and I guess I’m curious ious you know as you
transitioned to Independent um independent work and everything else it
sounds like it’s it’s going better
yeah yeah you said you didn’t have any immediate plans to return
no I make I make way more money um myself do you still get tested regularly
as an independent all the time yeah fig
yeah they know my face the testers several places know my
face I get tested so regularly yeah do you have um an exit
plan for this line of work um I
do yeah it’s multi-tiered well that sounds that’s
like the best answer I’ve heard so far keep going I hate it when people say
no yeah I want to retire that’s part of the reason why I do this is I don’t want to work for the rest of
my life I want to retire at some point and this kind of line of work there’s no
nothing else that gives me the freedom or the money um that I’m great
at right not every it’s this this kind of work is not for everybody just because it makes me great money doesn’t
mean it’s going to make that person great money because you know I think that’s one thing like I I
have I have privilege you know I’m petite and I’m white and that goes a long way and I can recognize that so
it’s not for everybody right um and not just you know like in the terms of meeting up with random strangers and
providing them the intimacy and care that they’re looking for because it varies and differentiates between so
many people right what what one person would love me doing to them the next
person right after that is going to hate it and turn me away if I if I touch them
in that way right you have to be skilled in communication and relationships and building with people and being able to
have the balls to just like L around with people you you know
um so so it’s not um yeah totally went on a tangent there
it’s okay that’s what this shows for I will say that uh it’s interesting I just had this thought and speaking to you um
I think the Allure of sex work is so interesting because it’s almost like one of the last semi Outlaw like cultures that that
remains like it reminds me of the wild wild west of America where it’s like cuz like some of the things you’ve mentioned
Emma it’s so crazy like you know you took this as an opportunity but some of the things you’ve been subjected to like
that one the group of men that confronted you for the 10% and kind of a
you know intimidating stature but then also you mentioned somebody else that said hey you know I’ll have you work
with me for the rest of your life like and then you mentioned pimps are real thing you know like it’s it’s crazy it
it seems like uh it reminds me of like a western like you’re just trying to get on your way to your final destination
but along the way there are people that you got to [ _ ] watch out for you know oh I had one security guard one time he was like it feels like I’m living in a mood movie and I’m like yep that’s that’s the best way I could kind of explain the the industry is it feels like living in movie A lot of the times you you go and the the like you have the highest highs of your life and the lowest lows of your life in the industry you you see the most crazy beautiful amazing things and meet the most amazing people you’ll ever meet in your life and you’ll meet the worst people you’ll ever meet in your life too you know so it’s a very uh you know it’s it’s not like there’s nothing like easy money if somebody’s saying easy money it’s not real they’re lying to you you know all money comes with some something right yeah so if if you’re making a lot of money doing something it’s because you’re going going to be putting up with some [ _ ] you know uh like when I worked at the chicken ranch my rates
were the highest they’ve ever been in my life but I also got worked I I worked harder than I ever did in my life too
when I when I worked there right so I was making great
money but also had to work my ass off right and then yeah and you know some
people will say like especially people that don’t agree with sex work they’ll say that you know sex work is
exploitation well and then I’ve heard a lot of people say well all work is exploitation
yeah all I I agree I think I think um you know in
terms of I I would prefer taking this kind of job because it gives me the possible
capability of me being able to retire when I do the math on especially in
Colorado I just looked up how much a home is going for in Colorado um right
now like an average home it’s going for $588,000
I am not going to be able to afford to buy a home with a normal job in the state that
I grew up and lived in working $20 an hour I’m not going to be able to buy a
500K dollar home that’s just not possible
um so I I totally you know I I think people got to start when when when
people look at sex work as exploitative I think they really got to look at the labor market within itself right um the
the Arizona the State of Arizona without the prison industrial system the the
docc said the entire economy is going would collapse without prison
labor right without slave labor I was about to say which is basically slave labor yeah yeah in the 13th Amendment
for our constitution right we have the right to legally enslave Slave people if
they commit a crime and to do slavery still in America so when we talk about
you know oh no sex work is so you know exploitative we should sit here and
question you know I see your little see your website
the the thing I can’t hear
you thank you sorry about that I was just showing our listeners uh that yeah the 13th 13th Amendment as
you said says neither slavery nor involuntary servitude except as a punishment for
Crime shall exist within the United
States yeah so a lot of our um current labor market like Walmart um it just
came out recently like Nestle uses slave labor right um so a lot of lot
we’re still using slave labor to this day and a lot of are you calling me from an iPhone right
now me no oh darn I was gonna say I’ve got my iPhone right here which is made by slave labor they’ got they’ve got and
I’m not saying that proudly I hope people know I know we’re laughing all we can do it’s so [ _ ] up is laugh about it but you know they’re putting Nets around that around the building foxcon because people are jumping off of that [ _ ] because they don’t want to
work they don’t want to build our cell phones so and of course the common retor you
hear which I don’t I you know I I’m not going to sit here and pretend like I know enough to be able to have this conversation and so we can Breeze over
it but people will say well if we made those phones in America they would be so expensive it’s like I would pay for a
slavery a nons slavery phone you know I’d pay a little bit more for a
non-slave phone exactly well you know I think that
it’s it’s more of the the people who are in power wanting
you and I or people that are you know don’t have the power to sit and argue
amongst each other rather than just agree upon things um because I’ve met a
lot of wealthy Andor powerful individuals um and not just within um
the sex industry right for some reason I’ve just had this ability of meeting
people it just comes it just comes to me right um and those those people they
from what they tell me their biggest concern isn’t you know um in terms of
profits and and increasing their profits because they’re very money greedy they
always want to increase profits they don’t they don’t care they always want to increase it right now the current
what costing them so much money at the moment is their labor force is their
employees and so what they don’t they don’t want to play everybody a livable wage they don’t want to pay the US any
of those things they want the cheapest most efficient labor as possible because
those types of people all they look at is numbers they don’t see people as individuals any
longer they don’t have that kind of empathy right they just see oh if we
fire 100 300 people here and then hire all these slaves in X
Y and Z or lower Cuts then we’re making more money right
um and so you know the people who own the prisons own the Walmart Etc right
I’m like Vanguard and black rock it’s all very um it’s all the same
problem essentially so I’m choosing not to engage with the problem is how I look
at it I love it I love it well um so do you
did you meet a lot of other worker like do you still stay in contact with people that you met in the industry do you have
like industry buddies um um the the club that I worked
at for on and off for the longest period of time um even though I haven’t worked
there in almost five no six months now because my business has been doing so
good I haven’t needed to go back um but I will show up and go say hi to
everybody um and everybody loves to see me and I love to see them too um I I
love the girls that I work with um I I still speak to a few of them um there’s
one girl that I worked at with the chicken ranch that I I I hung out with
and I flew over to New Jersey and I hung out her stayed with her for a week and that
was super awesome um she’s my favorite so um my current girlfriend is is an ex
ex dripper at the place that I used to work at so it’s kind of one big family I
feel like in a lot of different ways we may all hate each other love each other but we’re we’re still all there if
something happens to one of us the other like I’ve I’ve said this you know this is like even if a girl hates me if
something was going down she would still like be there for me like I would be there for her if like something was
really going down you know in terms of like like violence
right yeah we would have each other’s backs in your experience do many of the
women you work with also have an Exit
Plan um no um I think a lot of the women that I
work with at the strip club um they don’t have a lot of business plans or goals it’s very much
like I go and get dressed up and then make my money and then go home where I
feel like um the girls at the chicken ranch were the ones that were um led me
to the retirement questions and the Exit Plan questions like don’t like you’re
going to get old at some point so you got to think about that do you want to be selling [ _ ] tell you’re 60 no you don’t want to sell [ _ ] when you’re 60 you need to invest and this and that you know um very much encouraging on on a on
a stripper level yeah the reason I asked that
mindset yeah the reason I asked that is because like you know of course the common talking point is we’ve already
acknowledged is that all women in the sex industry are explo and so I ask that
because you know especially in the legal sex industry in Nevada it seems like if you’re if you don’t listen to the
episodes in this show I’m not even trying to give a plug for my own show
I’m being honest here that I feel like you could be sold a false bill of goods if you go into the legal sex industry
and you could you could find yourself in you know debt as you said and I’m just I
guess what I’m saying is is I worry that there’s like some validity
to that argument where it’s like some women do get get sent in the wrong
direction um but it just I don’t know the entire premise of the the argument
that all women are being exploited it it’s like it
basically paints a broad brush on women I feel and and acts as if they’re all victims I just worry about the certain
percentage of the women that are you know what I mean I know that’s where I feel like um
decriminalization is the biggest thing when they’re screaming about oh yeah the expectation of one women the
exploitation of women these women are being you know exploited right um is that
decriminalization is is where what that needs to happen because if those women
are being pimped out if those women are facing and being forced to do things
that they don’t want to do because I have the right to be exploited I have the right to choose does like most
people choose to go work right and be exploited all day at their work right
like we’re all being exploited right you think you think Walmart can afford to pay you more than
$11 an hour you got to be joking okay you know like well and I company I heard
a joke the other day it’s like you train to be a Navy SEAL there’s a possibility and this happens to people you could
drown yeah exactly like the world is dangerous
the world is dangerous and so so I don’t think you know like we should ban things
because the world’s dangerous that’s like the world’s always gonna be dangerous you know and
criminalizing women for doing something with their body should not be should not be a thing
because that keeps that those women who are suffering kept away because a lot of
those women who are being forced to do those things would much rather be forced to do those things than sit in a jail
cell and have a charge for the rest of their lives and have that hanging over their head for the rest of their lives
they’re trying to find a different way out besides reporting to the why would you report that to the cops that that’s
stupid right yeah you’re just gonna get T and I’ve I’ve I’ve seen it
happen it’s like the old joke of like before weed was legal I mean it’s even
still today if somebody breaks into your house and steals your weed what are you going to do call the cops about it like
no especially when it was illegal like no I’m not going to call the cops about somebody stealing my weed because then
that is me admitting I had weed you know yeah I’ve uh I’ve heard some
conversations about the sex industry in Canada and I know it’s not a lot of
um there’s still problems and cons with with the industry out there there but I know that that the decriminalization out
there has led it possible for the sex workers to be able to call the cops if they need to and the cops even like give
them their their numbers personally and like hey if there’s anything that happens just call me right away right so
there’s a lot more um like safety is important but I do you know I do want to
emphasize also that the the like it being illegal and it being so of such a
wild wild west like you’re talking about is part of the reason why I think the prices are so high as well so either way
I’m still winning either way I’m still winning from it because when I used to work at
the chicken ranch the guys when they would come in there from other other countries besides America when I would
tell them my rates they would be like are you [ _ ] kidding me like I’ve never paid that in my life I PID two 00 for three hours in Europe you know and I’m like yeah not not GNA happen here honey like have a great day right but like all of those all of those places are legalized and all of those places are very heavily regulated Etc right so for me I’m winning in in both ways right but for me decriminalization is very important for for the most vulnerable of us because I like to speak out for the people who can’t speak out for them elves um because most most sex workers never have the privilege to go to the chicken ranch right they never have that like I I was very lucky I was sitting around a whole bunch of famous porn stars all of these different things right um a lot of people don’t have that ability to drive all the way to Nevada or to fly all the way there they don’t even have the money to be able to afford to pay for the licensing there’s so many barriers that are set up to even get the legal access to be able to do that job and there’s probably Max maybe 500 spots in those houses so you’re competing against H thousands of other women for those kinds of spots you know um so yeah yeah yeah it’s it’s all it’s crazy one of the thoughts you made me think of when you mentioned uh police uh there was a bill in Illinois and I know this is true in many states uh there was a bill in Illinois to make it illegal for police to receive oral or uh like some sort of sex from a prostitute to so let’s just like take a step back that means that today it is legal they can they can like yeah give me a little bit ahead and then afterwards they can be like this woman is a prostitute we need to arrest her on the basis that I just got head it is legal in um several States for for cops to um receive services and then charge a girl for and I’ve seen stories I’ve never met a girl but I’ve I’ve seen it on the internet like I’ve read through unfortunately I’ve read through a few stories yeah those things are are real and it does happen and that’s part of the reason why I think it stays you know illegal is is people who like to have their power like to keep their power right you know um I think I think the the thing that would most help the industry 100% is giving the women like me and the other women you’ve interviewed the power to be able to run our own businesses because and and have some type of you know more more strict rules in the way of how they can you know scam us for our money or Etc I know that like a lot of girls they were really pushing towards like employment like for strip clubs like that that’s been a thing like in in California they pushed for strippers to be from independent contractors to employees and that’s that’s the wrong move in my opinion you don’t want to give them more control you just want to have them actually follow the laws of an independent contractor because for an independent contractor you are legally allowed to make your own schedule as long as you pay your rent for that spot they should not be telling you how to do your job what to do any of those kinds of things on a on a variety of different levels they they can’t tell tell you you can’t take a break right in a lot of these places brothel strip club they will tell you not you can’t take a break they’ll tell you what to wear they’ll tell you a variety of different things that is not within independent contractor laws right yeah yeah that’s one of the things that I found um misleading I saw a report way back in the day when Dennis Hoff was still alive that said like sex workers could get um health insurance and it’s like yeah you can but it’s not like the Bunny Ranch is paying for it like like a traditional employer would like it’s interesting you know little things like that where it’s like it’s not that it’s untrue but it’s like misleading yeah I think um because we have an image to uphold right and when you sit there and or or if you’re working for these companies right you don’t want to sit there and trash these companies or give them any reason to you know not want to hire you and so a lot of women are afraid to speak out about anything that would advise or oppose somebody to because it is such a small industry too everybody knows everybody you know it it it goes very quickly everybody does know everybody yeah I’ll walk into a strip club in a different state and I’ll be like I know you how are you doing yeah so um but I also think that it’s important to be realistic about things because you know there’s a difference between talking [ _ ] and being realistic and saying hey these places do take half your money hey
you are going to be working 247 if you work there right and that’s not saying
hey this place needs to you know like never exist ever again right we can look
at something and go hey I want to I want to take something I see that’s great and make it even better and that’s my
mentality about it yeah yeah well said and that’s been like I
was mentioning earlier the whole approach of this series and um so that end I just want to take a moment to say
I did I meant to mention it earlier in the show but I think it’s better that I just mention it now um you’re one of the
first sex workers to have reached out to me to come on the show and in that spirit I wanted to let people know if
you’re listening right now and you are a sex worker and you’d like to come on and talk to add to or talk about or add to
some of the things we’ve discussed in this episode or throughout the series just go to our website uh and fill out
the contact form and I will get back to you um as soon as possible so um thank
you by the way Emma for reaching out to me and being willing to talk about these things so openly and I just wanted to
say I hope this isn’t the last time we talk on the podcast so yeah I would love to talk some more
go further in depth um I totally reached out to you because I I saw your um
podcast with Tory Lisa and I’ve been following her since like
2020 like a years years ago I I saw her on my Facebook and I’ve been following her for a while and I saw her interview
with you and I really liked the your your conversations and your questions and all of those things um so I’m just
very thankful and I’ve had a great time so thank you so much for sure well yeah I
look forward to the next time we can spark up a joint on the show I do have to run um but before we go and before
the next time we speak I wanted to give you this space did you want to say anything else that we didn’t necessarily cover before we
go um no I don’t think is there anything else you nope just wanted to give you
the space I mean just while we were on air it’s my first interview so I
to it’s all good yeah no I I really enjoyed our conversation today and uh I
just felt like I did a lot of steering of the conversation so I just wanted to give you the space before we went if you
had anything but um no worries so uh like I say looking forward to the next
time that we chat we’ll stay in touch um and you know keep doing what you do stay
safe and uh yeah just want to say thanks again for being willing to chat yeah
thanks you too have a good day yep and folks I hope you found as much value in this conf ation as I did go to the
memo.com seex if you’d like to see the conversations I’ve had with other sex
workers uh even staff members former managers and I’m trying to think just
other people that have been in the sex industry once again that’s the memo.com
seex we’ll see you on the next episode of the co memo take care
